The history of the OSCARS - Best Picture Winners part I (cherryflavourpez)

Thanks for this cf. What an interesting list. I've only seen about a quarter of these, and there's quite a few in here I haven't even heard of! 1945/6/7 sound particularly interesting. Looking forward to reading about the rest, it's quite a task you've set yourself!

Academy Awards Best Picture 2011

Hi folks, I know how much y'all love the Oscars, so I've made it my business to check out all of this year's nominations for Best Picture. Here for your reading enjoyment, are the 2011 runners and

The Welcome Topic

Hi Erland, welcome to the community :) I just watched something that might interest you: Dirt! The Movie (2009) I thought it was pretty good. Did you see it already? Elaine (in who's in France, but who'd much rather be in Australia)

Facebook Me (mattmakins)

Like the review Matt, and I also liked the film although not as much as some of the ravings I've read. I thought it was a brave move to make a film about Zuckerberg, who is still alive, and rich enough to hunt you down with as many expensive lawyers as it takes. On paper, it's not easy to make a film about building a software application, but I found the story engrossing. I have to admit I'm a bit of a fan of 'how I built my multi-million business with only a used serviette and a tube of toothpaste'

Krwawy diament (2006)

It's 1997 in Sierra Leone. The civil war is at its height. Rebels are fighting government troops for control of the country. However, this battle is not only against the government troops, but also

Children of Men (UK, 2006) (cliodhna)

I suspected I might be in a minority with this one :) Pippin, I read your review before I posted mine, and I was a bit suprised we differed so much. It was a bit of a 'did we see the same film' feeling. Maybe watching it for the first time 4 years after the release changes things. Yes, the dialogue. I ran out of space to write about that. I particularly remember the: 'You OK' - 'I'm OK' - 'We're OK' - 'It's OK' sequence. It's definitely in the 'wasted 90 minutes of my life' category, so the

'Children of Men' starts dull, and ends up boring. That's the one line review for people in a hurry, and to be honest, is as much time as is worth spending on this poor effort. It's the United

Emmys 2010

Errr. Well... true, I haven't seen everything he's ever done. It gets my vote because in my mind, he's Tony Montana/Scarface or Godfather gangster, and this is a million miles removed. My favourite film of his so far is the fabulous Glengarry Glen Ross, and as an individual performance this is farrr better. Available now on a wonderweb near you :)

Brazil [Gilliam, 1985] (santoposmoderno)

I know, I know, it's a masterpice, I'm supposed to love it. However, I absolutely hated it. It was one of the few times I have wanted to walk out on a film. Unfortunately, I was stuck in the middle of a row of a packed cinema, and couldn't get out. I seem to remember I had my eyes closed and my fingers in my ears for large parts of the screening. Which makes me think that to have had such a strong effect on me, it must be a masterpiece.

Oscar Flashback - Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) (Pippin2010)

I also had mixed feelings about this one. I thought some bits were painfully illuminating - the white kids in the RV, the black street kids, and the driving instructor stand out in my memory (which may be flawed, I watched it when it came out in 2006). But other bits were awful - the treatment of the elderly Jewish couple was particularly unfunny. On the whole though, I enjoyed it. It had never been done before, it was a fresh, new idea. It worked best when it exposed opinions and beliefs that

Kylie, heh? And all this time I thought you were the latest in a long line of Pippin descendants - like Thomas Cruise Mapother IV or John Davison Rockefeller IV. Maybe even minor European royalty, descended from Pepin, Count of Vermandois perhaps? Ah well. Never mind. Think I might stick with Pippin anyway :)

The 'Serious' Film--US > Going > Gone?

I've been meaning to reply to this for ages, finally got round to it! There's not much that's not French or American distributed here either. However, it doesn't matter. I've been to a physical theatre twice in the past 3 years. There's no NetFlix, or ILoveFilm here, and I don't even know if rental shops exist. The internet is my friend. I really appreciate the fact that I'm not limited to current releases, or French films. If I try hard enough, I can pretty much watch anything from anywhere whenever

Not bad for a French zombie movie. Normally, a zombie movie, let alone a French one, wouldn't be my first pick. But hey, a change is as good as a rest. My experience of zombie moves is limited to 'Shaun

Emmys 2010

I'm happy to see that 'You Don't Know Jack' was nominated for an Emmy. But even happier to see that Al Pacino won the Lead Actor award. The film is great, but Pacino is really outstanding. His best role ever IMHO. Has anyone seen the other movie nominations: Temple Grandin (winner), Endgame, Georgia O'Keeffe, Moonshot, The Special Relationship? Any recommendations?

Name that film

Aha. Google succeeds where IMDB fails. It's 'If These Walls Could Talk 2' (2000). Funny, I'd forgotten it was in fact 3 stories. Well worth a watch.

Name that film

I'm trying to remember the name of a film I saw ages ago... It's an elderly lesbian couple. The setup is that one half of the couple - the half that owns the house that the couple lives in - dies. I seem to remember she falls from a ladder in the garden. The other half is left. The pair have been very discreet, to the point where nobody knows that they were actually lovers, and no legal provision has been put in place. The adult children of the dead partner turn up, and start dealing with the

The 'Serious' Film--US > Going > Gone?

Hear what you say sketch, but to be honest, I don't care. Especially since I moved to France, I don't even get to hear about the vast majority of the US popcorn films. It's great. Since I no longer have a local multiplex showing the latest and greatest car chase/shoot out/explosion, (or have friends who want to go see it), I've discovered there's already more than enough excellent films made by the rest of the world to keep me going for the rest of my life. It only matters if what's showing at
